Justis 5 Technical FAQs – Networking

Here you will find answers to technical queries affecting the Justis 5 software on stand-alone or networked computers.

If your question is not answered on this page, there are several other pages of FAQs listed on the left of your screen.

  • Q – I have completed a Network Server installation and am running Windows locally on each Workstation - do I have to go to each of my 200 Workstations to set them up individually?
  • Q – How do I get all the workstations to find the databases on the network without having to go to each machine?
  • Q – Why does the Network Options program tell me that Justis 5 is not installed?
  • Q – Is write access required to the server or workstation hard disks?

Q – I have completed a Network Server installation and am running Windows locally on each Workstation - do I have to go to each of my 200 Workstations to set them up individually?

A – No, you do not. With network licenced copies of Justis 5.1 and above, we supply a floppy diskette containing a utility to enable the Administrator to pre-set some settings on the server. These are: Customised Database Menu, Database Locations, Export Directory and Limit, Disable Highlighting and Notes features and Online Settings. You can also pre-set the required installation information for the workstations e.g. installation directory. The Administrator should write a script to set up an icon on each workstation pointing to the 'special' setup program which, when clicked by the user for the first time, will install Justis 5 automatically without any user intervention. Once this has completed, Justis 5 will be launched.

Q – I have installed Justis 5 on a server and performed 'workstation installations' on the workstations. How do I get all the workstations to find the databases on the network without having to go to each machine?

A – Using Notepad or any basic word processor create an ASCII file called Userpath.txt. In this file type the path to each CD (or database) on a separate line. Save the file to the Context/Justserv directory on the server. All the workstations should now know the location of the databases on start up.

You can create this file with the Network Options program (NOptions.exe) that was supplied to you on a floppy disk.

Q – Why does the Network Options program tell me that Justis 5 is not installed?

A – When using the Network Setup diskette supplied with network copies of Justis version 5.1 or higher, you need to run a Server installation and a single Workstation installation (using setup.exe from the Server copy of Justis 5) before using NOPTIONS.EXE to customise further workstation installations. See the printed Installation Guide for Justis 5.3 on a Network Server or Workstation.

Q – Is write access required to the server or workstation hard disks?

A – During installation, write access is required to the Windows folder.

Each user requires full access to their own folder in which temporary and permanent files such as notes and saved queries are stored.
